Ladakh

Ladakh, situated amidst the Great Himalayas and the Karakoram ranges, is unique by virtue of its location, topography, culture, history and natural heritage. It is a spectacular place in the world where scores of tourists throng from across the globe annually. Ladakh consists of awe-inspiring landscapes, picturesque green oasis, scintillating monasteries and quaint hamlets. It is famous for its rich cultural heritage and pristine environment and has been attracting curious and mystified travelers over the centuries.

Ladakh comprises of two districts, Leh and Kargil. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils of Leh and Kargil are each headed by a Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor. There are 193 Gram Panchayats and 31 Block Development Councils playing a pivotal role in strengthening the grass root democracy. Leh consists of 16 and Kargil of 15 blocks. As per the 2011 census, the population of Leh is 1,33,487 and that of Kargil is 1,40,802.

Vision 2050 has been developed for Ladakh and decision making is being strengthened through involvement of over 1700 elected Panchayati Raj representatives.

Education has been a thrust area for the Ladakh administration. Innovative means of imparting education including 'YounTab' - a tablet pre-loaded with lessons, online education and setting up of astronomy labs are major initiatives taken in recent years to improve the education sector in Ladakh.

Leh and Kargil have 89 per cent government and 11 percent private schools. 58 percent of students are boys and 42 percent girls in Leh, while in Kargil the percentage of boy and girl students is 60 percent and 40 percent respectively.

  • Government Girls Higher Secondary School Kargil

    The Girls Higher Secondary School Kargil was founded in 1987 and today has 555 girl students, taught by 25 teachers, from classes 9 to 12.   • Government Higher Secondary School Khaltsi

    In the Sham valley of Leh, the co-ed Government Higher Secondary School Khaltsi was founded in 1995. The school with 180 students and 21 teachers teaching for grades 9 to 12 is considering adopting the SEE curriculum by the Emory Univerisity that emphasises Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning. The school's motto, Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve, is exemplified by Dr. Tonyot Gailson, Senior Resident Pediatric.

  • Government Higher Secondary School Sankoo

    Government Higher Secondary School Sankoo is one of the first higher secondary schools founded in 1995. The school is committed to giving every student a well-rounded education that fosters self-control, a feeling of responsibility, social and global awareness, and academic performance.

  • Government Boys Higher Secondary School Kargil

    It was the first Higher Secondary School to open in Kargil in 1975. 535 boys are currently on its rolls for grades 11 & 12, with 22 teachers. The school aspires to impart value education and inculcate a sense of socioeconomic responsibility in the students. It has guided & mentored the aspirants of many fields through career counselling and is proud to have many intellectuals who have excelled in diverse fields, since its establishment.

  • Government Boys Higher Secondary School Leh

    Founded in 1920, Government Boys Higher Secondary School continues to have the district’s biggest student enrollment. 33 teachers are assigned 415 males studying for grades from 9 to 12. The school strives for high standard of achievement and good behaviour. It works closely with the locals to help its students grow into good citizens. The school also promotes equality, kindness, respect and tolerance. The motto of the school, encouraging creative, challenging and enquiring minds is exemplified by the current Chief Education Officer, Shri S.D. Namgail, who is also an alumnus.

  • Government Girls Higher Secondary School Leh

    It is one of the oldest girls’ schools in Leh. It was founded in 1954 and was headed by the great educationist, Eliezer Joldan. The belief of the school lies in empowering girls with quality education so that can do wonders in future. It is the district's only girls’ school, which serves the academic needs of female pupils. Dr Landol, a renowned Genealogist, Madam Tsering Dolker, Station Director AIR, and Madam Tsewang Dolma, former Principal of the school are among the alumni of the school.

  • Government Higher Secondary School Shargole

    Government Higher Secondary School at Shargole was founded in 2003-2004. It is the only School in Shargole to impart higher education for grades 9 to 12 and is equipped with technological facilities like smart classes and ICT laboratory, Astronomical Lab etc. The co-ed school with 156 students and 22 teachers, believes in the motto of the school to Learn, Leap, Levitate.

  • Government Higher Secondary School Silmoo

    Silmoo’s Government Higher Secondary School was established in 2005. For grades 9 through 12, it is the only higher secondary school in the Batalik sector. Former MP, Shri Hassan Khan is one of the notable alumni of the school. The co-ed school with 106 students and 18 teachers, uphold the motto of the school to Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve

  • Government Higher Secondary School Sumoor

    Founded in 1936, Government Higher Secondary School at Sumoor is one of the oldest in Nubra and the only Higher Secondary School in Saichen Belt, for grades 9th to 12th. The co-ed school prides itself on a long list of eminent alumni, among them doctors, engineers, politicians, bureaucrats, teachers and many more. Colonel Chewang Rinchen (awarded MVC twice) and former Union Minister Sh P Namgyal, to name a few. The motto of the school is Enter to Learn and Leave to Serve.

  • Government Higher Secondary School Tangtse

    Government Higher Secondary School Tangtse was established in 1956 and continues to be the only school offering higher secondary education in the entire block located along the Indo-China Border. Since its upgrade in 2001, the coed school, which has 129 students in grades 9 through 12 and is taught by 18 teachers, has been a residential school. The motto of the school is Enter to Learn and Leave to Serve.
