The Union Budget 2025, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, brings a wave of transformative initiatives in education, with a strong focus on digitization, AI, and high-end capabilities. From expanding access to broadband in schools to fostering scientific temper through Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs), the budget aims to revolutionize learning experiences across India.
One of the most ambitious initiatives in this budget is the establishment of 50,000 Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs) in government schools over the next five years. This initiative aims to cultivate curiosity, innovation, and a scientific mindset among young learners, equipping them with practical STEM skills. By integrating hands-on experimentation and problem-solving techniques, ATLs will nurture future scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs.
To bridge the digital divide, the budget has also promised broadband connectivity for all secondary schools across the country. This move is crucial in ensuring seamless access to digital education resources, online learning platforms, and skill development programs, enabling students to learn beyond traditional classrooms.
Building on India’s commitment to artificial intelligence, a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education will be set up. This initiative will leverage AI-powered tools to personalize learning experiences, improve assessment methodologies, and optimize curriculum planning for students across different educational levels.
The government has also introduced the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme, which aims to make Indian language books available in digital format for school and higher education students. This step will enhance accessibility and promote linguistic diversity in education.
Recognizing the need for enhanced higher education infrastructure, the budget has allocated resources for the expansion of IITs established after 2014, including IIT Goa and IIT Dharwad, allowing an additional intake of 6,500 students. Moreover, 10,000 more seats will be added in medical colleges and hospitals as part of a long-term goal of increasing medical education opportunities over the next decade.
